2007 Minutes of Ottawa Section

Minutes of June2007 Meeting
On June 5, at the home of Neville Miller of Velocette fame, We had 12 members and 2 guests, including Glen
Marchand who also lives in Blackburn Hamlet, and a Holidaying British guest of Brian Baker who now rides a
Harley V-Rod.
Nobody went away hungry and Neville provided lots of snacks and beverages.
Patrick chaired the meeting, as he was sat at the table, and had easy access to a ring wrench (spanner) for
tapping on a tea cup to bring the meeting to order.
We discussed the feedback from the Ottawa Bike Show. We need more space for next year. Overall very
successful event with lots of positive feedback from the public.
We discussed preparation for the St Albert rally. Eveything seems to be in hand. We need to get more posters,
and make sure all vendors are contacted. Patrick mentioned that we have sold 27 T-shirts to date, leaving 55 to
sell, including the 2 for Frank Trepanier's special order.
Neville delivered an interesting account of Velocette development engineer Harold Willis’s invention of the positive
stop gear box, between 1926 and 1928. This was quite a historically important invention and improvement on the
gated hand shift mechanism of the time which required some time consuming hunting and pecking to navigate.
Neville gave a physical demonstration of the workings of a three speed box with main shaft and layshaft and the
ratcheting positive stop mechanism.
Afterwards, we went into the garage to see his restored 1928 Velocette KSS, a replica of Alec Bennett’s Isle of
Mann TT winner that year. Then it was out to the Velo Works around back to see some of his racing machines
from the thirties on up. We almost missed the black Rudge 250 in all the excitement.
After all that, we just went home.
Minutes of May 2007 Meeting
The May meeting was held at the home of Bruce Ray.
19 members attended at Bruce Ray's abode, 8 came on bikes. Tom Higginson brought Jim Higginson as a guest.
Jim is into old motorcycles and we hope to see him again soon.
The meeting got off to a tardy start as about half the group were content to stay in Bruce's garage and discuss the
fine job he had done on his recently completed Yamaha 650cc Cafe Racer.
Bruce had also provided lots of Pizza and refreshments - it was unfortunate that some of us had eaten before we
arrived.
President Frank Trepanier opened the meeting. The meeting had more heavy duty agenda items than usual, and
it was fortunate that we had the bright mind of Dave Makin in attendance to keep us focussed and to come up with
very constructive proposals.
The first topic was discuss the CVMG proxy voting proposal as distributed by the CVMG Vice President who is
taking forward this initiative proposed at the CVMG AGM last year by the Ottawa section.
It was proposed by Dave Makin, seconded by Brian Given, that the CVMG proxy voting should follow the model
used in corporate votes, where members can specify their decisions to published amendments or candidates for
elections, and also give an open proxy to any other CVMG member, who will be attending the AGM to vote on
unpublished issues that come. This motion was carried.
The executive will wordsmith the formal response and circulate to members, after which it will be sent to the CVMG
executive.
The next item was to solicit any proposed Amendments to the CVMG Constitution and Bylaws. These will be sent
for publication in the CVMG News and be voted on at the CVMG AGM in November.
Dave Makin made the following proposed amendment, seconded by Brian Given.
Re Clause 9F - that the CVMG Treasurer publish in advance and present statement of assets, liabilities and
income, including any payments to executives or other CVMG members or group. This report to also contain a
proposed budget of all foreseen expenditures that will be voted on at the AGM.
The proposed amendment was carried unanimously.
Dave Makin made the following proposed amendment, seconded by Brian Given.
Re clause 4e any proposed change to annuals fees must be accompanied by a detailed budget with projections
and forecasts to support the increased fees. This budget must be approved at the CVMG AGM.
The proposed amendment was carried unanimously.
The executive will wordsmith the formal amendment wording to members, after which it will be sent to the CVMG
executive.
The next item was the CVMG Cross Country Vintage Relay Ride (CCVRR) . Bruce Ray the Ottawa Section CCVRR
coordinator reported that accommodations are requested for 5/6 people. We are investigating having a common
location, if this is not possible several members volunteered spare mattresses and sofas It is planned to have a
BBQ or meal after the rally.
On the following Sunday the CCVRR will meet at Local Heroes and the Ottawa Section will accompany riders to
Merrickville.
It was agreed that it was not practical for members to leave the St Albert rally to meet the CCVRR riders on the
way from Montreal.
The events committee made a report. St Albert T-shirts have been ordered and can now be reserved.
We still need members to state what motorcycles they will be displaying at the Ottawa Valley Bike Show, we have
had some responses but still need more. We can provide help with transportation if required. It is getting close the
event is June 2nd and 3rd. Please help us have a good turnout. We also need some volunteers to man the stand
on Saturday or Sunday - commitment a couple of hours. reply to admin @cvmgottawa.com.
That was enough for one evening so Frank adjourned the meeting and everyone went back to talking bikes in the
driveway for another hour.
The next meeting will be held at Neville Miller's home on Tuesday June 5th.
See you there and ridin' the roads......
Ottawa Section CVMG
Minutes of April 2007 Meeting
The April meeting was held at Patrick Hampson's house on Tuesday April 3rd.
Attendees
Neil Hossack, Peter Gaby, Neville Miller, Curt LaBond, Brian Given, Bruce Ray, Patrick Hampson, John Lebreque,
Brian Morrison, Greg K, Steve Wlodarczyk, Don Cutts
12 members attended at Patrick Hampson's abode, 2 came on bikes, including Brian Morrison on his 1998 Ducati
900. The slight shower we had caused him to ponder if he should stay for the meeting, given his skid mark
producing twitch that he made departing Local Heroes on Sunday. Brian did stay for refreshments and we believe
that he made it home safely.
Brian given, our esteemed VP acted as chairperson as President Frank Trepannier and his hammer where
unable to make the meeting.
As 8 members had participated in the events committee meeting held just before the main meeting, where St.
Albert rally T-shirt design had been the main topic for discussion, it was decided that the main meeting did not
need to hear the grisly details, so it was agreed by all that a report for the main meeting was not necessary.
Likewise, there was no financial report - but everyone knows we are in good shape.
We did discuss the Gary Byrne proposed amendments to the CVMG Constitution.
* By majority vote it was agreed that the Ottawa section did not want a specific age criteria for machines
associated with CVMG members.
* By majority vote it was agreed that the Ottawa section supported the use of the word "machine" in the CVMG
constitution, and that it did not support replacement with work "Motorcycle". The rationale was that we did not want
to exclude scooters, Harley servi-cars, Andy Halls Ariel Square 4 running engine etc.
The meeting adjourned at that time and everyone resorted to good conversation, looking at the West Quebec ride
map, finishing off the ham and pepperoni, and generally discussing the joys of owning and restoring old
motorcycles.
The May meeting will be held Tuesday May 1st at the home of Bruce Ray, where we are looking forward to seeing
his progress on his café racer.
Special Note for this weekend.
There is the Spring Motorcycle show in Toronto this weekend, at the International Center , 6900 Airport Road,
Toronto, Ontario, Canada. There are several single make clubs and several CVMG sections participating.

Jim Hunter Master Builder Trophy
Frank Trepanier proposed that the club, spend up to $500 for the trophy that was previously announced at the

It was also mentioned that others have offered to contributeanonomously, both time and funds, to further improve
the trophy arrangements, such as providing a travelling or presentation case.
Brian Given indicated that he had spoken with Jim, and that Jim's preference was for it be presented at the
Christmas Dinner. Brian will have further discussions with Jim to finalize the award criteria.
Neville Miller raised the issue of the late Les Sponigle trophy (not sure of spelling - my apologies if wrong) to get it
back to circulation. If anyone knows who has this trophy, please advise the executive so that it can be put back
into circulation (or reply to this email).
There were several remarks about the "Piston Broke" trophy, but it was agreed that Frank Trepanier was the
given the award on a lifetime basis, with Bob Guzzo running a close 2nd.

Brian Morrison's painted tank presentation
Brian Morrison discussed the Algonquin College Tank Painting course and brought along a Beauitiful red Triumph
tank. It turned the instructor had done the actual painting, but Brian had done a wonderful job in the preparation,
which we all know is the important bit. Brian also offered members a tour of Parliament Hill, in his capacity as
advisor to the Speaker. Several members expressed interest, and Brian will advise of details.
Monthly Meeting "Technical Topic" Presentations
It was agreed that there would be a "Technical Topic" at each monthly meeting, please volunteer by replying to
this email, otherwise you may be asked to give an impromptu talk on the mysteries of Joseph Lucas electrical
systems.
Outstanding items
By this time, everyone was ready to adjourn, the meeting, and get back to good conversations, and consuming the
remaining food and drink provided by Don Cutts. Which we did.
Post Script
We had a panicky five minutes when Don thought that his brand new (almost priceless) Gold Star piston had gone
missing (or had been pillfered - but no one said this). All that remained was a cardboard box, with a strange piece
of pipe inside. Luckily, for Don's heart, Bruce Ray asked the question "didn't you say that you sent the crank to
John Gurr in Montreal ?" Problem solved, Don remembers that the piston was with the crank - safe and sound in
Montreal.
That's all Folks...
Patrick Hampson (webmaster and minutetaker).

ea. They will inform him when they come in. Ongoing: Frank
Last Year’s Registrations: The list of last year’s registrants has not been found, though the list of vendors has
been located. Action: Brian, Frank and Don
Judging: Pierre had contacted Bob Guzzo but no firm commitment. Peter Gaby suggested Gregg Kricorrisian
might be a suitable judge. Action: Pierre
Awards: Bruce had contacted the national executive and obtained a list of judging categories. It was generally
agreed that we wouldn’t have enough entries to make such a system worthwhile. So it was decided to go with last
years categories plus two new ones; Best Scooter and Best Interesting Machine in the Parking
Lot.
Award List
Pre-1940
1940 through to 1955

grouping the machines this year: Pre-1940 in the middle surrounded by groupings by country of origin (American,
European, Japanese)
PA System: Nev contacted Kevin McDonough and got a budgetary quote of $150 for a 1 day rental of
microphone/mixer/amplifier + 4 speakers and cables suitable for outdoor use. Nev to inspect Pierre’s guitar amp

motorcycle article by Shannon Le Mannion. Action: Frank and Bruce
Special Award: It was suggested that since it was the 40th Anniversary of the CVMG special awards should be
given to Bob Guzzo and Jim Hunter who were founding members of the Ottawa Section.
Action: ?
Signage: The request for better signs was noted. Pierre to get in touch with Glen Mackintosh and obtain the old
ones. Neil offered assistance if they needed some refurbishing. Action: Pierre
Field: Last year’s field had ac power available and so was considered preferable. Item closed.
Tables and Chairs: Providing some tables and chairs to sit on was thought desireable. Likewise, having beverages
available in the field might be beneficial. Action: Pierre
Jim Hunter Trophy: Brian checked with Jim who was in agreement with the idea of awarding the trophy annually at
the Christmas Dinner to the club member who has made the best progress with a rebuild. Peter offered to assist
in sourcing something appropriate and, if necessary, building a suitable plinth. An upper limit on the cost to the
club was set at $500 and this would be discussed at the general CVMG meeting to follow this Events Committee
